On Saturday December 14th, Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) professional coach Chris King, held the first ever Red Ball Fun Day facilitated by the Barbados Tennis Centre in Wildey. Over 60 children between the ages of five and ten years came out to be introduced to the sport, and also engage in exciting challenges. King said he wants to make the sport of tennis a more popular option for parents looking to find a sport for their young children to adopt. The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados is calling for a nationwide ban on the importation and sale of toy guns. General secretary Dennis de Peiza said toy guns were a gateway to the real thing, as he added “practice makes perfect”. De Peiza was speaking yesterday during the association’s monthly media conference at the Barbados Union of Teachers, Merry Hill, Welches Road, St Michael. Players in the rum industry gathered at Mount Gay Distilleries in St Lucy yesterday for the launch of a new barrel bond. The facility, which holds 18 000 barrels, is state-of-the-art with fire prevention and mitigation systems and a cellar where airflow and its effects on evaporation can be controlled and measured. Patrick Jackman did not just lose a son when Antonio Bishop died early Saturday morning along Bennetts Road, St James. He said they were close like brothers. It was hard learning of his son’s death and identifying the body, but friends and some of their former cricket colleagues have been calling and lending support. Bishop, 37, of of Alleynedale, St Lucy and his friend Ron Benn, 41, of Rose Hill, St Peter both died in the accident. Two others were injured and taken to the hospital. When Sue Benn heard the words “fatal accident” she knew her son Ron Benn was gone. She told a Nation team the last time she saw him, he was getting ready to go to a staff party. Ron, 41, of Rose Hill, St Peter and his friend Antonio Bishop, 37, of Alleynedale, St Lucy died in an early morning accident on Sunday along Bennetts Road, St James when the car in which they were travelling struck a utility pole. A man and woman, whose identities have not been made public, were injured and transported to the hospital by ambulance. They were also in the same vehicle. The Alexandra School in St. Peter has recorded significant improvement in academic performance, with students achieving 130 Grade I passes at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations in 2024, an increase from 112 in 2023. This achievement was highlighted during the school's Speech Day on Friday, held under the theme Building With Purpose. Featured speaker Carol Martindale, Editor-in-Chief at The Nation Publishing Co. Limited and an Alexandra alumna, during her address, acknowledged the challenges faced over the past year and encouraged students to seize new opportunities. Congratulations to our young reporter Diara Springer, who captured the top prize in the Shirley Chisholm Arts Competition. She performed the spoken word piece Chisholm’s Tapestry at the Awards Ceremony. There were 30 entrants in the public category and Diara earned a trip to New York. The competition was part of Celebrating Shirley – 100 years, commemorating what would have been her centennial year. She became the first black woman to be elected to congress and in 1972, also became the first black woman to vie for a presidential nomination. Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Kay McConney, made this call during her remarks at the TVET Council’s 30th anniversary gala and awards ceremony, held at Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord’s Castle Resort on Sunday evening. McConney emphasised the Council’s responsibility to sustain a well-performing system that meets national and regional demands while encouraging them to embrace change in order to address the shifting needs of the labour market. The clothes on his back are all Edwin Griffith has left after a fire destroyed his home in Water Street, Christ Church, on December 7. Not even his dogs survived. “There was nothing I could do,” he said as he recalled how the blaze consumed his house and shed, and damaged the adjacent sports bar and restaurant owned by his son. The cause of the fire is yet unknown, according to Tremelle Perch, divisional officer of the Barbados Fire Service which responded with three tenders, one each from the Port Fire Station, Worthing Fire Station and Bridgetown Fire Station.
